Bookkeeper, accountant, or CFO — which do I actually need?

A bookkeeper records what happened. An accountant files it, advises on tax and structure, and signs things. A CFO decides what it means and what to do next. Nearly every small business needs the first two consistently. The third is usually needed occasionally, not permanently.

Get the bookkeeping right first

Every other role is built on it. An accountant working from bad records produces expensive corrections, and anyone giving strategic advice from them is guessing well. If one thing gets fixed this quarter, make it this.

Your accountant is underused by most owners

Most people speak to theirs once a year, at filing. They can usually tell you a great deal about structure, timing and what your figures actually mean — but only if asked, and only if the records are good enough to say anything from.

The CFO-shaped gap is usually a visibility gap

Owners reach for a CFO when they feel they are flying blind. Often the real problem is not the absence of a senior finance brain — it is not knowing what each job makes, or when cash gets tight. That is answerable without a monthly retainer.

What none of them do

None of them is there on a Tuesday when you are deciding whether to drop a price to win a bid. That gap between the annual accountant meeting and the daily decision is where most owners actually live, and it is not usually solved by hiring further up the chain.

Also asked

Can one person do all three?
In small businesses, sometimes — but be clear which hat is on. Advice about what to do next is a different service from recording what already happened, and the second does not qualify anyone for the first.
Do I still need a bookkeeper if I use QuickBooks?
Usually yes. The software records; someone still has to categorise correctly, reconcile, and catch mistakes. Bad data entered efficiently is still bad data.
Where does Eliv8 OS sit?
Beside them, not instead of them. It reads your books and helps you think about decisions day to day. It does not do your bookkeeping, file anything, or replace professional advice — and it says so when a question needs one of them.
